My first year and a half in college has really opened my eyes to what the real world is like through my experiences with friends, everything I’ve learned in my courses, and through conversations with mentors of mine. I learned a lot about social media’s effect on society in high school through working for my school newspaper. We learned about a lot of past cases regarding the media and how the current media laws in our society came to be today.
Our scholars' colloquium really helped expand my understanding of how the media works and how media laws continue to evolve every day. Through learning about advertisements, politics in media, and various social media sites, this course gave me a more complete understanding of media and its influence on all of our lives. The meaning of our course name (media, self, and society) became very clear to me throughout these past three semesters as I continued to learn more about how the media operates, how it influences each of us individually, and how we operate as a collective society. At the start of the colloquium I thought this was just a class to discuss events in our media but I learned soon enough that it was more about the media’s influence on each of our lives and on our society as a whole.
This class helped me put together how the media affects my life and how it plays such a big role in how I go about each of my days. Going to those Tuesday classes with our whole program during freshman year was honestly one of the highlights of my week because of the comfortable learning environment that our leaders were able to provide. I always felt comfortable to share my opinions with the class regardless of whether they were popular because of the open-mindedness of our class as a whole. When learning about the media we discuss current events going on in the world which ends up sparking a lot of debate. It was amazing to be able to debate with my classmates and be able to understand both sides of every story regardless of which side I believed.
It was amazing to be able to have a deeper understanding of how current events in the world are portrayed differently depending on which facet of media is displaying it. We were kept updated with current events every week and we watched videos during all of our classes that keep us in the loop with what’s going on in our country and around the world. A lot of times I get so busy and wrapped up in my own endeavors that I lose focus on what is going on in the outside world which is why I am so appreciative to have a class that always keeps me up to date with the important events going on in our world.
Twitter is one of my favorite sites because it is a platform for people to write about whatever is on their mind and share funny content and serious content as well. However, a lot of the posts can be hurtful to particular groups of people and fake news can be shared and reshared by twitter users all of the time. However, I tend to use Twitter as a source of news because I choose to follow accounts that I genuinely trust to share truthful and accurate information.
Twitter has taught me how to be careful with what news I pay attention to because not everything that is shared on the internet is accurate. My older brother and I are constantly discussing our favorite pages on twitter and we make sure that those pages all share accurate information by source checking with other sites. Being on twitter over the last couple years has taught me a lot about being careful on social media and to constantly fact check all the information I get from media sites.
I receive a weekly update of how much I am on my phone each week and the average number of hours per day I am on my phone is actually quite scary. I am constantly communicating with friends, surfing through social media sites, and am sending posts of all kinds to my friends. Media has become such a big part of my daily life and the lives of everybody around me, yet we don’t always take the time to think about how often we all really use social media. I’m not a huge producer of media but I definitely have my fair share of posts on media sites like instagram, twitter, and snapchat. My content has changed over the years as I have become more careful of the information I want to share about myself with the public. I see myself in the media consumer role as I am constantly using social media all of the time and I wouldn’t consider myself to be a producer of media because I don’t tend to post as much as lots of other social media users.
What I loved most about Media Scholars is that there are such a variety of students in the class who all have their own beliefs, opinions, and values which is why the conversation is always so rich. All of us came in with our current beliefs but hearing what all my classmates had to say about the media and society as a whole was able to help me form more sophisticated beliefs. I loved being able to share my opinions with my classmates and hear their opinions about a particular subject so we could either discuss why we believe the same thing or try to understand the thought process behind the others opposing viewpoint. We were always able to challenge each other by discussing why our opinions were different and trying to understand each other's perspectives. Talking in groups with others is my ideal way of learning which is why I always enjoyed going in person to scholars and talking with my classmates.

The first picture is from one of my first Maryland football tailgates as a freshman. It was also parents weekend and I had a great time tailgating with some of my friends from scholars and all of our families. However, we went on to lose to Indiana by a large margin.
This is Madelyn Schloss in the picture above. I met her the first day of our scholars program and she became one of my best friends in college. I am grateful to have met her and for this picture of her posing at the African American History Museum.
This picture was taken on one of our scholars field trips when we went to the Holocaust museum. I went with some good buddies of mine and we spent the day walking around D.C. once we left the museum . We made a whole day out of our scholars field trip and learned a lot from what we saw at the museum.
