My Personal and Professional Development
I have found during my time as a student at the University of Maryland that my personal growth and development is just as important as my professional development and progress as a student. As a very social person, I have learned how important communication truly is on a personal and professional level. Networking is a key tool I have used in order to gain work experience and potentially help me with future job opportunities. Communication has also been very important as a student to gain greater connections with my teachers and stay up to date with my school work. On a personal level, I am an extremely extroverted person and gaining greater communication skills has allowed me to build stronger connections with my friends and learn important life skills. Communication has also helped me realize how important it is to always ask for help when I need to and to utilize the skills and opportunities my peers and professionals have. To be able to accomplish great things in my future, I understand I cannot do everything on my own and to surround myself with the people who support me and my endeavors. As an example from my growth as a student, I utilized my friends, family and professors input in declaring a major in the business school. By communicating my interests and skills and also listening to what my peers had to say about their declared major, I was able to narrow down my options to declare a Finance major. While I know I am only going to grow personally and professionally from here till the end of my college career, I am optimistic in gaining valuable life experiences and skills to help me succeed in my future.
Why I Chose This Piece Of Evidence:
I uploaded the assignment of our interview with a member of a nonprofit organization because I feel like it gives a great overview of the discussions that tend to take place in our class. I interviewed a friend of mine who has volunteered for the nonprofit called “Friendship Circle” for many years and I got to learn a lot more about his experience with it and how he grew as a person. Even though I didn’t get to participate in any in person volunteer work while taking this course, I still feel as if I grew as a person simply from learning more about the nonprofit sector and individuals who are a part of it. I got to learn how to conduct an interview while also learning a lot of details about this specific nonprofit and the function of certain individuals within the organization. This was one of my favorite assignments from this course even though it required more work than most others because I got to reach out to others and utilize my communication skills to get the best result possible. I loved participating in the actual interview while also learning so much about a good friend of mind and the organization that he grew up volunteering for. The interview went very well and my friend was more than happy to share his experience with me. Hopefully I can participate in something similar in the future and get to share my experience with others to encourage them to volunteer and help better our society in any way that they can.
